Guide 01 · For your inbox

How to listen to a long email

Forward a message to Play My Mail. The reply gives you a private listening link, so you can hear the message at your pace while following its text.

Forward, open, listen

  1. Forward the email to hey@playmymail.com. The readable body of the forwarded message is what gets converted, even if you put a note above it. Attachments are skipped.
  2. Open the link in the reply. The reply also contains a separate management pass. Keep both private. You do not need an account or app.
  3. Play and follow along. The listening page has an audio player, an approximate highlighted reading view, 15-second skip buttons, and speed controls from 0.75× to 2.5×.

For forwards longer than 500 words, the reply offers a link that opens at 1.5× speed. You can still change the speed on the page.

A fictional example you can hear

Imagine a newsletter you saved to read later. It has useful updates mixed with event details and deadlines. You forward it to Play My Mail and receive a temporary listening link. The example below uses invented text. Its permanent MP3 was made locally with a synthetic voice that may differ from the production voice. It is not a live customer link or a recording made by the production service.

Subject: Your weekly roundup

Hi there. Here is your weekly roundup, with a few things worth catching up on. This week, we published a new guide to low-cost weekend plans, including free events and rainy-day ideas. Registration for next month's online workshop closes Friday. The live question-and-answer session has moved from Tuesday to Thursday at six. If you already registered, your spot is still confirmed. We also updated the events calendar and added a short reading list for anyone who wants to go deeper. If there is a question or topic you want covered next week, reply by Sunday. Thanks for keeping up with us. We will be back in your inbox next week.

Check Do not delete yet on the page to keep it for twenty four hours, or use Delete to remove it now.

The real listening page highlights transcript lines approximately. It does not contain word-accurate timestamps, so use the audio as the source of truth if a line appears early or late.

What happens after listening?

A new link starts with a 24-hour lifetime. Finishing the recording can shorten the remaining life of that shared link to 60 seconds. Anyone with the link can choose DO NOT DELETE YET to keep it for up to 24 hours within its maximum retention window, or delete it immediately. Learn the exact timing and management options in the link expiry guide.

Try it with an email in your inbox
